After 20 years of spending time in the backcountry of Alaska, I am still awed at the magnitude and beauty of our mountains. Being based in Anchorage provides great access to several different mountain ranges, including the Chugach which is considered a mecca for backcountry snowmobilers and heli-skiers alike. The best part of it all is that there are a lifetime of riding zones with exciting terrain to explore within a 4 hour drive of Anchorage. The coastal mountains which typically receive over 500 inches of snow annually are very different than the taller peaks and dry snowpack within the interior.
Someone once told me to build your career around your lifestyle, and not your lifestyle around your career. Having a flexible schedule allows me to venture out into the backcountry during the middle of the week and take advantage of ideal snow and weather conditions. I feel blessed to have a job and family that supports this pursuit.
If you find yourself drawn to Alaska to ride, the months of March and April are the best. The days become longer in spring and if you catch a bluebird ride after a storm cycle it will be a day you’ll never forget!
